If you have been struggling with learning French, you probably wonder how you could make it less difficult and more fun. I present to you my favuorite way to practice French without even thinking about it: izap4u.
A zap is actually a sequence of very short videos from all over the internet assembled together to form a truly amusing collection. The team behind it is French, and all videos in English have subtitles in French, as well as all French videos have English subtitles. This is exactly why it is such a good way to improve your language skills – you won’t even realize how much you’ve learnt while watching. And unlike regular movies, a single zap provides a wide range of topics and vocabulary.
I personally love izap4u because each sequence has a little bit of everything: documentaries, fail videos, music, cartoons, and all sorts of funny moments gathered together resulting in an amazing overall experience. Most videos will make you laugh, some will make you think, and others will make you wonder how sick people can be. And before you have the time to process the creepy piece you just watched, here comes another one that will have you laughing out loud. With people’s attention span getting shorter and shorter, a 5-second video is just enough.
There’s a new zap every week, and you can watch the short versions (around 15 minutes) in izap4u’s channel on Youtube, or the full ones (40 – 80 minutes) on their website. If you enjoy the zaps, you can contribute to the project by making a donation – the website is ad-free and there’s a team of just 3 people dedicating their free time to entertain us (and help us learn French on the way).
Language learning shouldn’t be boring. We learn best by having examples and context, and why not learn French in the context of an epic movie scene, environmental issues, or just some random video in which people use the phrases they usually use in their day-to-day life. This is the language you can start using right away rather than the one in the grammar books. If gross, ridiculous and unexpected is not your type of humour, though, you should probably check some classic French movies instead.
